Definition of Revenue

What is the definition of revenue? Another word for revenue is gross income. Revenue consists of all the cash or any other assets your business receives for compensation of products or services it provides.

Revenue or gross income is different from net income, in that you do not deduct any expenses before you calculate it. For example, if your company charges $50 an hour for cleaning services and you billed for a total of 100 hours in the month of March, your total revenue for March is $5000.

However after you deduct the cost of cleaning supplies, answering services and any other expenses your business paid in that month in order to perform these cleaning services, whatever is left is your net income.

On your income statement, all revenue is listed at the top of your statement. Revenue = net income + expenses.
