When Do You Need A QuickBooks Upgrade?

How often do you need to get a QuickBooks upgrade?



That depends on what you use it for. If you use QuickBooks' online features such as emailing invoices, online banking and online payroll features, you will need to upgrade QuickBooks at least every couple of years in order for these features to work.

However if you use QuickBooks offline, I have clients who's version of QuickBooks goes back as early as 2000 and still works fine for what they need.

Before You Upgrade

Make Sure You Like The Latest Version of QuickBooks

Not every version of QuickBooks is better than the version before. So before you uprade, make sure you are happy with the latest features. Regardless of whether you like it better or not, the new format usually takes some getting used to.

I used the QuickBooks email feature for sending invoices and other reports and loved it. But when QuickBooks required me to upgrade in order to use this feature, some of my clients didn't feel this convenience alone was worth spending the money on the ugprade.

So instead I save invoices, financial reports and other QuickBooks documents and reports as a PDF on my computer and then email it as an attachment. You can do this on QuickBooks versions starting in 2006 by opening the invoice or report you want to send, then go to "File" and choose "Save as PDF."
