Here are some things you should be good at if you want to start a bookkeeping business.

1) You are a people person.

Sometimes people choose a career in bookkeeping because they are better at dealing with numbers than people. However, if you are starting a bookkeeping business, you will need good people skills.

It is true, in a bookkeeping business, you are mostly working with numbers. However, you are handling a very important thing: people's money, their livelihood, so it is not enough that you are trustworthy and diligent, you must also be a people person.

That is, you need to be friendly enough that people will want to work with you and trust you with their business. If you do not have this quality, it will be very hard for you to succeed in starting a bookkeeping business.

2) You are willing to put in a lot of time and maybe a good deal of money out of your pocket before you see a significant reward.

When you are starting a bookkeeping business, the sky is the limit. The possibilities of what you will eventually be able to accomplish by starting a bookkeeping business are endless.

However, it takes a lot of time and patience to build any business. Remember, this is not a job, this is your business.

You're no longer paid by the hour. You're going to put in work advertising, organizing your business, billing your clients, etc. which you will not be paid for. So you're going to need to have enough patience to stick with it until the money begins to flow.

This is all the work that your boss does if you are working a bookkeeping job. So if this does not sound like something you are willing to do, than maybe starting a bookkeeping business is not the right thing for you. You might be better finding a bookkeeping job.

3) You have a lot of SPUNK!

Spunk? Yes that is an important quality. Spunk is the one word I use to sum up all the qualities you will need?

Spunk stands for: Systematized...Perseverance...Understanding...Notice...Knowledge

Another word for systematized is organized. You need to have organizational skills for any business, but especially a bookkeeping business. You need to have a good organized system in place so you can meet your clients needs efficiently.

Perseverance is especially important when starting your own business. You will find yourself up against obstacles, and that's good. Obstacles come with growth. But you need to have the perseverance to overcome these obstacles instead of giving up.

Remember before when I said you need to be a people person to start your own business? Well, one very important people quality you need to have is an understanding your individual client's priories and their individual needs. Otherwise you will become flustered very quickly.

What is it you need to notice? You need to be able to notice the trees AND the forest. This is a quality that all good business people have in common, but it is especially important in a bookkeeping business.

In other words, you need to be able to pay attention to every detail and yet still be able to see the bigger picture. You must see the bigger picture when it comes to your business and when it comes to each of your individual client needs, but then you must also be VERY detail oriented in order to get the job done.

Finally, you must be willing to continually seek out and invest in building your knowledge. We live in a changing world, so you must constantly educate yourself in order to stay ahead of your competitors and give your clients the best possible service.

When you're working a job, your boss is probably telling you of any changes in procedure, etc. But now that you are starting your own business, it is up to you to keep yourself updated at all times.

4) And last but not at all least...

Attention to Detail is a Must!

Attention to detail is the one quality you will need regardless of whether you are starting a bookkeeping business or looking for a bookkeeping job.

With today's technology it is not as important that you be good with numbers as it is important that you are very careful and detail oriented. If you are not good at tedious work, bookkeeping is not for you.

If you are lacking every other quality, you might still get by if you are good at paying attention to details. However, if you are careless and sloppy, I'm afraid bookkeeping is the last thing you should be doing because you and your client will suffer big time.
