Virtual bookkeeping can be done done either from your home office working on your client's computer in their office, or from any computer working on a remote server.

Working on Your Client's Computer from Your Home Office

LogMeIn is how I get some of the work done for some of my bigger clients that have networked computers in their office which I need to be able to access.

It is an online software that allows you to access a computer remotely. It is installed on the computer that you are accessing and then as long as you have the password for the logmein account associated with the computer as well as the password for the computer it is installed on, you can access that computer as if you were sitting right there.

It's a little weird the first time you try it, especially for the person actually in the office, but once you and your client get the hang of it, it allows you to sit at your home office and work on your client's books in their office.

The only thing necessary to make this work is a very good internet connection. Otherwise, everything you do is delayed from the time your hand hits the key until the time that you see it on the computer screen in their office, and that can be very frustrating.

Working on a Remote Server

QuickBooks has a service that allows you to store you file remotely on their server. This helps ensure that your file is always backed up and it also gives you and your client the ability to access the file from anywhere at anytime.

Build your own website. If you're not happy with the choices out there and you're looking for something more customized to your specific needs, you may consider building your own website with special log in access for each client.

Meeting with Your Client Virtually

What about how to meet with your client remotely? There are several technologies out there that give you the ability to meet with your client through video conferencing.

Go to Meeting is one such online software that allows you to host meetings from your computer. You can give presentations, talk with your client, and much more.

What all this translates into is, you can be a virtual bookkeeper from anywhere at any time and better cater to each of your clients needs, wherever they are.
