What Are Operating Expenses

What are operating expenses versus other expense account?

Operating Expense

Operating expenses are listed on the income statement after income and cost of goods sold. They consist of the costs that you incur operating your business in order to bring in an income.

Examples of operating expenses are payroll expenses, office expenses, supplies, legal expenses, accounting expenses and advertising expenses.

Other Expense and Other Income

Other expenses and other income are listed on your income statement after operating expenses and before net income. These consist of expenses and income not directly incurred from the operation of your business.

Examples of other expenses and other income are interest expense and interest income.
